Arkitera Travel Grant 2017

Sponsored by Geberit, Arkitera Travel Grant 2017 announces its annual theme as:

Theme: The time goes by…

Humankind have always been interested in building timeless architectures.  A building erected thousands of years ago -yet still standing- is a physical indication and evidence of the tremendous effort spent by its patrons, owners, users, builders; to go beyond the human-life and survive for the civilizations as well as centuries to come.

Today, we can trace and learn about ancient civilizations from their remnants; and these surviving remnants are overwhelmingly architectural. By implication, a civilization which constructs the most resilient building also constructs the most timeless history of itself.

From 20th century onwards, architecture, is a profession that defines itself with innovation, forward-motion and thinking; is a practice with close ties to the industrial and technological rapidity. Compared to the pre-industrial world, contemporary architecture has a fundamentally distinct pace of building and unbuilding.

But, how does contemporary architecture establish a relationship with time and timelessness? Does time go by yet still the architecture remain?

This year, we invite you to discuss how the concepts of ‘permanence’ and ‘time’ are embraced or disregarded in the architecture of 20th century and onwards. In this respect, we would like you to decide on a route questioning the influence of time on architecture as well as permanence of/in architecture.
